The problem, before us

Mr Faris spent twenty years as a project manager. At 50, he was retrenched. For six months he applied for jobs, and for six months nobody replied.

It was his wife who told him to bet on the one thing he’d always been good at: baking. So the family sold their house to raise the money, and in February, B.R.A.D opened beside the badminton courts at Fernvale Village.

The cookies were genuinely good. But Singapore is full of good cookies, and B.R.A.D sat in a corner of Sengkang with barely any footfall.

Mr Faris was baking alone. His son squeezed videos in between NS duties. “We literally don’t have time to create content, although we know how important it is.”

And this was the shop their house was riding on. There was no plan B.

The angle we took

The story, not the product. Every bakery posts pretty cookies, and nobody crosses the island for a pretty cookie.

So we led with the one thing no other bakery could copy: a father who sold his house to bake. The product keeps customers coming back. The story is what walks them in the first time.

The story earned them free national press

We never pitched a single journalist. The story video did the pitching: AsiaOne, Berita Harian and Berita Mediacorp all ran the house story on their own. Coverage like that can’t be bought. And it never stops working, the articles are still online today, sending anyone who googles the shop straight to a 4.8-star bakery.

The answer

So how did B.R.A.D grow revenue 101% in 30 days?

One story, told properly. The videos put the shop in front of 750K+ strangers, and the press told them it was worth the trip. After that, the cookies did what good cookies do.
